TRAININGS ON THE THEME “WOODEN CULTURAL HERITAGE RESTORATION” FOR TRADITIONAL HANDICRAFT MASTERS OR SEEKING TO BECOME ONES

Trainings on the theme of Wooden Cultural Heritage Restoration for traditional handicraft masters or seeking to become ones  were held on 2015 09 30 to 10 01 at Neringa. These trainings are the part of the project "Restoration of  wooden cultural heritage building at Neringa" (no. EEA-LT06-KM-01-K-01-028), as implemented by the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism of cultural and natural heritage conservation and revitalization program.

Part of the trainings for traditional handicraft masters or seeking to become ones  was led by representatives of a project partner from Iceland - Simbahöllin ehf., other part of the trainings was led by known Lithuanian experts (cultural heritage expert, ICOMOS member K. Demereckas and shipbuilder, weathervane artist and restorer V. Bliūdžius ).

Representatives of the project partner from Iceland (Simbahöllin ehf.) Wouter Van Hoeymissen and Janne Kristensen spoke on the restoration material selection, tool usage, building techniques of the main construction works, also presented their experiences on refurbishing over 100 years old worn wooden structure assigned to Icelandic cultural heritage in collaboration with Icelandic cultural heritage department (fitting café instead of the old defunct vegetable shop).
The other two representatives of the project partner (Haukur Sigurdsson and Vaida Bražiūnaitė) presented practical solutions, implemented in other cultural heritage sites in Iceland.

Renowned cultural heritage expert, ICOMOS member K. Demereckas presented the material on wooden cultural heritage restoration processes and organized workshops (together with V. Bliūdžius) at the wooden cultural heritage building being now restored (on topics of the restoration material selection, tool usability, as well as building techniques of the main construction works, methodologies for the calculations and reading of technical drawings).

An excursion to Fisherman's ethnographic farmstead for the participants of the trainings was organized (in addition to the practical and theoretical information presented by partners of the project and Lithuanian experts), thereby allowing both participants of the trainings and organizers (especially partners of the project) to compare and evaluate practical solutions for cultural heritage protection already implemented in Lithuania and Iceland.

Representatives of the project partner not only contributed their expertise to the trainings, but also shared their experience and knowledge with JSC “Karmeda” on adapting cultural heritage structure for the needs of the community (community activities, exhibitions and educational activities in order not only to diversify the local community life activities, but to attract as much as possible visitors to the restored cultural heritage site ).

Encouraged inter-institutional cooperation and raised interest in the activities carried out in the region as well as increased attractiveness of the area is expected as the result of trainings held on the theme of Wooden Cultural Heritage Restoration. By implementing project activities JSC “Karmeda” is also seeking to draw attention to the responsibilities of the the cultural heritage (buildings or building complexes) owners and managers.
